Currant Bushes for Sale

While they’re not well known to most American gardeners, the mild, sweet-yet-tart taste of currants (similar to gooseberries) has been enjoyed for many years overseas in Europe. Oftentimes, the berries are used for jams, juices, syrups, preserves, wines, and baking. They freeze well, too, so you can get the most out of your bumper crop year after year. Currants can also be eaten fresh – and are especially healthy since they’re high in both Vitamin C and antioxidants. With their uniquely shaped foliage, the currant bush can even be used as a fruiting hedge, planted to offer a charming edible landscape to any property.

Besides being delicious and versatile, the currant bush is also easy to grow. Most cultivated varieties come from the likes of Europe, Asia, Russia, and certain parts of North America, which explains the plant’s cold hardiness. Bushes typically grow to approximately four to five feet tall and can be grown in most northern production areas on well-drained soil with good water retaining capacity. If your soils are sandy, you’ll have to mulch and irrigate.

Well-maintained plants can produce bountiful fruit, season after season. The unique flavor and aroma make them a great selection to add to your garden.
